Two weeks of Battlefield 3

Posted by Acoon on November 15, 2011

Battlefield 3 has been out for about two/three weeks, and I though i would write my thought on how i see the game. Before anyone questions why I write here and not in the official forums, you will see later on :)

The topics I will go through is:

  • Gameplay
  • Mechanics
  • Graphics

Since I'm a pessimist of nature, I will most likely describe the bad stuff and forget the good stuff :)

Gameplay

Overall I find the game amusing. What you need to keep in mind, is that last time i played a Battlefield game, it was Battlefield 2. Because of World of Warcraft I kinda skipped all the expansions etc.

The game itself is good and the gameplay is more or less the same as BF2. You still have conquest games but they also added new rush and team deathmatch. For the most, I play conquest because it suits me better with the classes i normally play.

Mechanics

Lets start with battlelog.battlefield.com. This is just what the world need. Another community site with more friends and news streams. Sarcasm may be used.

In world of web 2.0/3.0/4.0/whatever, EA/Dice has decided to use your browser as a platform for the game. Before you enter the game, this seems like a good idea because it gives you the feel of starting playing within seconds. However, there are some drawbacks on this method.

  • Time from finding a map until you are actually in the middle of the battle takes to long, since there is alot of data that needs loading. Roughly 2 gigabyte.
  • If you decide you want to switch server, you have to exit the game completely, find a new server, and start it all up again. What you saw in BF2, was that you were in the game at all time, which meant it could reuse some of the data already loaded into memory, hence minimizing load times.

We can hope for an ingame browser at some point to let us do some fast server switching. But let's stay a little longer at battlelog site. Ehy, oh, why have they closed the site so much that you need to buy the game the read the forums or see the player statistics? They are not only shutting the door for users, but also search engines. Meaning that google, bing and others are not able to crawl the content for easy finding.

The very first thing that annoyed me started in the beta, and is still there: KILLCAM!

This is the snipers worst enemy in this game. It can be disabled if you have your own server and down't use normal settings. However, hardly anyone does that. I pray for EA/Dice to disable this killcam on normal settings.

Graphics

The graphics in Battlefield 3 is good. I've been trying on Ultra settings for a while and it looks really good. However, when playing multiplayer you may want to turn most settings to low, or turn them off entirely. To many details can make it hard to spot the enemy :)

The only two issues I have, belongs more in the mechanics, but I'll leave them here instead. The flashlights on weapons are insane. Not sure how a flashlight can blind when they are 100m away. But I've heard that they might scale the light a bit in a future patch.

The second issue i have is the lense glare. I've tried to be in shadows, at night, inside buildings, daylight etc and no matter what: You will always get the lens glare if you in front of the scope. It is NOT light dependent, so you might aswell attach a laser sight or a flash light on your sniper rifle. More or less the same effect. you can also use 8x or less zoom, and then you will not have lense glare, but will loose the range.
